Coaching Kids Versus Over-Doing: How to Raise Responsible Kids

Parenting means raising children to be responsible adults. After all, one day we actually won't be here to take care of them! That's where coaching versus over-doing comes in.

  • Coaching means teaching, so that the child learns to do for herself.
  • Over-doing means taking over the responsibility instead (homework, chores, etc.).

Coaching is cleaning up alongside a child, to show her how to do it; over-doing is cleaning up for the child instead. Coaching is helping with homework; over-doing is giving all the answers.

Great distinction to make. Thanks for the great tip, Cynthia Miller !

Over-do it consistently, and the best case scenario is that you raise a child who is over-reliant on your support throughout childhood and well into adulthood. The worst car scenario is a child who is disengaged - from study, work and from you!
